THREE SIMPLE FIXES

About 10 years ago I worked in TV & Film, although a short stint, it forever changed the way I watch TV or movies. I know where there is an edit, why people are positioned a certain way or that the headrests in the car are missing. It's the same way with fashion for me now, there are a lot of men still making minor mistakes that can ruin their whole look.

THE BOTTOM BUTTON

Whether it is a long tenured politician or a brand new articling student at a law firm, I see this a lot. The bottom button of a 2 or 3 button suit is never, ever meant to be buttoned up. It doesn't help that many stores display their mannequins in the window with the bottom button done up as well. Let's end this confusion now, never button up the bottom button.
Additional Tip: Unbutton your jacket fully when you sit down.

TIE LENGTH

Your tie should reach your belt, consider it your safe zone from the top to the bottom of the belt. The tie should never be above or below.
  • You don't want to see your shirt between your tie and your belt.
  • The tip of the tie should not go past the bottom of your belt.

NEVER EXACTLY MATCH THE TIE WITH THE POCKET SQUARE

This is another confusing one since many times department stores ties and pocket squares are sold in the same fabric, in the same package. My opinion on why they do this is because they have the left over fabric after the tie is made, instead of throwing it out they just add it in to charge a little more. The goal with the pocket square is to compliment the look, whether pulling colors from your outfit into your pocket square or choosing a complimentary color. Your best bet is to have a white cotton pocket square, it goes with everything and you can just transfer it between suits.
Additional Tip: Don't have the pocket square and tie of the same fabric. Silk with silk or cotton with cotton. Instead opt for a silk tie with a cotton pocket square.
If you have been doing any of these things wrong they are easy to fix. These are only a few of the style tips we have in our free eBook. You can download it here to start dressing for success at little or no cost to you.
