How to Wear Bright Colors and Bold Patterns: Men’s Professional Style Tips

Tip #25: Always draw the eye upwards.

You buy those red pants, crazy pattern socks, Fluevog shoes or really any bold color or patterned clothing that you wear on the bottom half of your body. The problem? Everyone is now staring at your pants, socks or shoes. The eye is naturally drawn to the crazy color or pattern in your outfit, which is fine but the goal is to wear it on the top half of your body to draw the eye up to your face.

Drawing Attention

I recognized I would stare at peoples socks or shoes when I am sitting down for a coffee or meeting with them because of the heavy pattern or bold color they had. After I realized that I would go to a networking event and watch the people who were talking to someone with bold colors. Their eye would naturally be drawn to it. It is a fascinating thing to watch but overall, we want to show off our style but I always recommend doing it on the top half of your body.

For example, consider a brightly colored linen jacket in the summer, a bold tie or pocket square, or a heavily patterned dress shirt. These elements of your outfit will add personality and show your unique sense of style, without the risk of people constantly staring at the bottom half of your body.

Inspiration

If you're looking for inspiration, consider the following:

A bright colored linen jacket: This is the perfect piece for the summer and adds a pop of color to any outfit. Pair it with any shade of grey pants and neutral shoes to allow the jacket to pop.

A bold tie or pocket square: These small details can make a big impact. Consider a tie in a vibrant color, such as rich colors like maroon or forest green, or opt for a patterned pocket square to add interest to a solid dress shirt or suit jacket.

A heavily patterned dress shirt: This is a great way to add personality and make a statement. Look for shirts with bold florals or geometric patterns to add interest to an otherwise simple outfit.

Pattern socks: We all love them, but make sure the base color on the sock matches your pants, then add a fun design, pattern or gimmick.

Conclusion

Dressing to impress doesn't have to be complicated. By focusing on the upper body, you can make a bold fashion statement and draw attention to your face. So go ahead, experiment with different colors, patterns, and styles and discover what works best for you.
