Tip #20: The four rules to slim down your wardrobe and streamline your closet.

Your favorite t-shirt from college, that sweater you bought with intention of wearing but you never did, that old pair of underwear with holes that you wear when you don’t want to do the laundry…We all have them but can’t part with them. It takes intention and as we always preach, a plan, to be able to revamp, refresh and sometimes completely redo your wardrobe.

4 Ways To Clean Out Your Closet

Depending on the size of your closet or the size of your wife’s wardrobe, everyone needs more room in their closet. If you are not sure where to start with overhauling or cleaning it out, use our 4-step process. The first step is to create four piles: donate it, toss it, tailor it or keep it.

Donate It

If you have a garment that is still in good condition but doesn't fit you or you can't see yourself wearing it again, consider donating it. Many organizations pick up from your home and are in desperate need of gently used clothing.

Toss It

If a garment has rips, tears, or stains and cannot, or should not, be donated, it's time to toss it. Don’t waste space. If it is sentimental, put it in a box and store it in your garage or crawl space.

Tailor It

If you've recently lost or gained weight, or if you have garments that never quite fit properly, consider tailoring them. This is often a more cost-effective solution than buying new clothes, and it will help you get the most out of your existing wardrobe. You will be surprised by how many items just need a little tuck or to be let out. Once this pile is complete find a tailor you trust who has the talent and capacity to take this on. Ask beforehand how much their alterations cost to make sure that piece is worth saving or if you should purchase a replacement.

Keep It

If you love a garment and wear it regularly, keep it. There's no need to part with clothes that you love and that you feel confident in. Just make sure you have a clear plan for wearing it, and that it fits well and complements your overall style.

Conclusion

By following these four rules, you can easily streamline your wardrobe and achieve a sleek and sophisticated look. You may also find that your wardrobe is missing certain essential items. Once you've made room for these essentials, you'll be able to build a wardrobe that is not only stylish but functional as well.
