BUYING YOUR FIRST SUIT

Dressing well is not something that is reserved for those making six figures, everyone can afford to do it. If you choose to buy off the rack we have put together a few tips to make sure you make the most of it.

REMOVE THE SLEEVE TAGS

Not sure why they don't do it for you at the store but make sure these are gone before you start wearing it. Just take scissors to get it out and there never should be a hole left.

REMOVE THE VENT STITCH

Again just take scissors to the stitch and it should come right out. Sometimes the sleeves also have a stitch below the buttons so remove those as well.

HEM THE PANTS

Make sure the break (the sag in the pants where the pants rest on the shoe) are no more than a full break. You can take it in to a local tailor and have them do it for you. Usually no more than $15.

PROPER JACKET FIT

Do not buy a suit that is too big for you, you will not look professional. The comment I usually hear is "they look like a kid in their Dad's suit." If you feel that $100-$200 is your price range make sure you account $50 for alterations. Here are the steps to altering it, in order if you can only afford one alteration at a time:
  1. First off make sure the shoulders fit before you buy it. No shoulder divots, these cannot be altered. (See Below)
  2. Bring the waist in, should not fit more than a fist between the buttoned up top button and your stomach
  3. Length of the jacket to your finger knuckles
  4. Shorten the sleeves, you should see the dress shirt peeking out by a 1/4" to a 1/2"
